CHICAGO — April 19th, 2018 — This week, Progressive Takeover, a new grassroots Political Action Committee, announced its flagship investment of $1 million on field staff, digital ads, and texting to turn out Democrats in state legislative races; the majority of funds will go to Wisconsin and North Carolina.

“Not only are Wisconsin and North Carolina purple states, but they are also states that have been decimated by the GOP’s blatant partisan gerrymandering,” said Katie Miller, Executive Director of Progressive Takeover.

The first investments will soon roll out in advance of Wisconsin’s June 12 Special Elections. Despite Governor Scott Walker’s relentless efforts to prevent and delay the elections, three different judges rejected Walker’s appeal to hold off on the votes until November.

In 2017, together with their affiliated organization Progressive Turnout Project, Progressive Takeover sent 42 field representatives into 10 targeted state house districts in Virginia. Their programs were hugely successful, flipping all 10 districts from Republican to Democratic control.

Progressive Takeover’s spending will fund field staffers, digital ads, and texting programs to reach Democratic voters in key legislative districts of Wisconsin and North Carolina.

Progressive Takeover was founded to target the most competitive state legislative contests in the country. Their field staff bring the latest in data-driven targeting and research-backed tactics directly to the voter’s door. Specifically, they hope to mobilize voters to end Republican gerrymandering, reverse voter suppression laws, and take back state chambers.

Despite winning the popular vote by nearly 3 million votes in 2016, Democrats are in the minority at almost every level. Republicans control 32 state legislatures and Democrats only 13. It hasn’t always been this way, though. As recently as 2008, Democrats held the majority of state legislative chambers, as well as the House, the Senate, the majority of Governor’s mansions, and the White House.

In 2010, however, Democrats suffered huge losses all over the country. Though Democrats lost seats at nearly every level of government, they lost the hardest at the state level. From 2008 to 2010, Democrats went from holding 60 of 96 legislative bodies to only 37. Though Democrats performed much better in 2012 (holding the Presidency and winning back Senate seats), they were not able to recover at the state level.

2018 and 2020 are key elections for Democrats, as they are the last opportunity to win back state chambers before 2021’s redistricting. Progressive Takeover’s programs are aimed at key states in the fight against Republican gerrymandering.

Progressive Takeover is a Political Action Committee (PAC) that was founded on the idea that electoral success and political change start at the local level. They believe it is time to give state races the same energy and resources we invest in a presidential election.
